From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to her two Carmelite sisters - October 27th 1940

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 27th October 1940

Dearest little sisters,

Have faith! Faith!!! Our divine King will save us and give us the peace we ardently desire.

If only you could hear our dear Mother pray. She’s a flame of love! Our sweet Saviour and His most holy Mother cannot remain deaf to such confident and loving abandonment. I want you to know her dear Mamma, too, for she’s a real saint. The bishop describes her in no other terms when speaking to our dear Mother. I’m sending you her last letter so you can see for yourself. I’m very fond of her. She’s a real friend and has the very fitting name of “Debon”.

Our beloved Mother still risks going back to the clinic. You can understand the anguish we feel in our hearts. May this cup be taken away from us. Unite your prayers with ours so that our sower of roses might let fall a healing rose upon her. Beloved little sisters, I’m so happy to have celebrated my ruby anniversary. In a blessed and intimate ceremony, I renewed my holy vows using the long formula and recited the entire Self-Offering to Merciful Love. Still, the crowning of that most blessed day was my great retreat, which, I hope, was my last.

My resolution is this; to definitively chase out my very, very tenacious pride. No one can say anything anymore; I’m excessively and absurdly sensitive. Help me, little sisters, to kill the little old woman inside me. She is in sore need of your charitable prayers.

I didn’t forget St Celine’s day. My Communion was for you, “inseparable sister”.

I send you a great big hug and all my love, which is now boundless, because you never stop spoiling me, my passionately-loved little sisters

The biography of Sr Madeleine of Jesus is most lovely and edifying. Thank you!
