Darling Léonie,

This month it is my turn to write and give you news of your little sisters. We are all well. Sr Marie of the Sacred Heart is busy looking after her garden. Everything she plants grows. Our Mother is on retreat for the day. She won’t take her great retreat until after 12th June, when we’re having a Reception of the Veil ceremony. As for me, I think I will take mine on the Tuesday after Pentecost. I think it’s a good idea to take it in summer. It’s always so cold in February. But I’m not intending to rest. I don’t think that I or our poor little Mother will ever have any rest in this world. You know that she often used to say, “Why seek to rest when we were born to work?”

Everything that has happened in the world over the past 9 years won’t make the earth a place of rest, either. Over the past few days, I’ve thought about all the crimes that have been committed, and how they haven’t taught us anything new other than what men’s hearts are really like. After all, “circumstances do not render men weak, but reveal their true nature.” I wondered how God was able to say in the Scriptures that “He found delight among the sons of men.” I then remembered that He didn’t say “among men” but “among the sons of men,” by which He meant “in the hearts of tiny children”. The Holy Spirit dwells in those who are still nursing and finds His delights in them. Out of the mouths of babes comes “perfect praise”. Oh, how right Thérèse was to want to become tiny! That is the only thing that is true here below: following the path of spiritual childhood. Oh, God is so good to have retaught us this!

I send you my love, darling little sister. Thank you for your wishes for the 24th. We didn’t forget you on the 31st, St Leo’s day, and we forgot to tell you so in the letter we sent! As for your photos, don’t send any to Mrs Tifenne. We’ll take care of that. Madame de Castelnau has the one of Papa.

Thank you for the list, darling little sister. It meant a great deal to me.
