To my much-cherished Léonie,

Your brief letter touched our hearts. When we read that you had wept, it didn’t take much to make us do the same.

It’s true that your letter dated 2nd July didn’t reach us either, but now we receive all of them via dear Emardine, and she is quite happy with this arrangement because she received a little note from you. She’s going to kiss it and treasure it. And to think that Sr Marie of the Sacred Heart laughed at me and at my idea! I’m pleased with myself, or rather, I’m grateful to our dear little saint for inspiring me!

We think that the thieves are targeting letters from the Department of Calvados more than others because of the little bonds that can be cashed in, or rather, that don’t need to be cashed in. On the other hand, all our Sisters are in the same boat, as letters from their families are stolen too. It’s a pity. We’ve noticed, however, that over the last week, we’ve had an increase in mail again. The Postmaster is keeping an eye on things. He is being very obliging.

O, little Léonie! You’re not still upset, are you? To comfort you, I’m sending you a few photographs. You will receive your 2 pictures of “Thérèse sick” on thick paper. We’re going to see to them. As for the others, I’ve dropped everything because it’s too hot to take pretty photographs and because I have trouble standing for long in summer. Instead, I’m using this time to correct Jouvenot’s wash drawings. There are 3 series of them! There’s “The little Way” – scenes from the “Life of Thérèse” – and illustrations of her “Miracles”. I have months of work ahead of me before they are all perfect. Afterwards, I’ll take photographs of all the retouched drawings and of those that have already been finished. I’ll certainly have my work cut out for me. I’m also adding a few touches to the photo of Mr Roybet’s painting. You mustn’t tell anyone! And I just keep adjusting and readjusting without actually finishing anything! As for painting little Marie and our Mother, it would be a major project, one that I will never undertake. I deal only with basic things, not with things requiring fine craftsmanship like that. Moreover, it’s a very bad shot of them and it couldn’t be enlarged for retouching. I send you my love, much-loved little sister! Your little sister

Sr Geneviève of the Holy Face u.c.n.

You’ll have as many novanas as you wish. These are the first, and arrived this evening. They are for promotion purposes. You mustn’t be difficult.

Sr Marie of the Holy Spirit sends all her love.
