Dearest little sister,

Thank you for your little letter. It came this morning. I knew that my darling Léonie wouldn’t forget her Céline’s feast day and that, along with her wishes, I’d receive a Communion and a letter perfumed with little flowers.

Consequently, dear little sister, without you realising it, your little deeds are fragranced by Jesus, because it’s not necessary to smell pleasant to please Jesus. Quite the opposite: it’s when we are most displeased with ourselves that we are truly pleasing to Him, and we can only be displeased with ourselves by being, or smelling, thoroughly imperfect.

O little Léonie, you can be sure that as long as you feel wretched and incapable of doing anything well, you’ll be in the way of the truth, because you’ll be humble and humility alone is what delights Jesus’ Heart.

As for your garden statue, how I’d love for you to have it by 15th August! Alas, will we have another disappointment? It certainly wouldn’t be the first, because our sky is rarely cloudless. It is always raining crosses great and small.

The question of the portraits is a very thorny one for us. Your Superior has always kept the Gombault model. As for this other group picture, how can I possibly rectify it? I’m going to try, very discreetly. I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Also, I almost forgot to mention the Holy Father’s blessing, which you had hoped to receive for 2nd July. We were convinced that your Community would see to it, because it would be rather improper for our Mother to ask for one for her sister in another Community. What’s more, they’re so easy to obtain! You can acquire them for any occasion now, including weddings and 1st Communions. The Holy Father isn’t even informed. The Blessing that Sr Aimée of Jesus received was signed by some Eminence or other. I assure you that it’s of no great importance. It’s not worth thinking about a minute longer. When you reach our age, you don’t have any illusions.

I’d like it if you wrote to me for 3rd September but it won’t be an outward celebration for me; the celebration will be in my heart. I sign by my old name sometimes because several of our Sisters have teased me about having taken back the name “of the Holy Face”. I don’t regret doing so though.

Goodbye, darling sister

Sr Geneviève of the Holy Face and St Teresa u.c.n.

I don’t know when we’ll have the new offices or the Bull. We’ll send everything to you first.

I’ve been given some Agnus Dei for my feast day. Would you like a copy?
