Dear little sister,

We received a telegram yesterday announcing the death of Mrs Tifenne. It was sent by Mrs Grant. Your Godmother left us on 9th June at 11 in the morning following a stroke. She had been in bed for some time and was very weak. She was administered the Last Sacraments on the evening of the previous day, while she was fully conscious.

Mrs Grant says that she didn’t appear to suffer, apart from when the doctors gave her an injection.

And so now she is in her eternity. She took the great leap and it was very simple to do, despite her immense fear.

Little Thérèse must have helped her. To Father Antoine, who had come to see her and to whom she had complained that she couldn’t pray, she admitted that she “invoked her little Thérèse all the time”. Now that’s a good prayer.

You no doubt know that the dear lady was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order and that she had made the Self-Offering to Merciful Love. It is comforting that she died on 9th June.

Now we’re going to be able to refurbish the large bedroom in Rue St Blaise because we bought the dark red bedroom furniture set from her.

I interrupted my letter here and I’ve found out that Sr Marie of the S. Heart has told you exactly the same news. We had agreed that she wouldn’t write to you this time and that I would be the one to tell you about our old friend’s death.

So I have nothing left to do but pack up and go, though not without wishing you a happy birthday. I took Communion for my dear little Léonie on the 9th.

I also want to tell you how happy I am that your Mother hasn’t changed, because both of them have always formed but one in your heart and in ours.

I send my love, darling little sister,

Your Céline

Sr Geneviève of the Holy Face
