Dear little sister,

I have just heard that you have received or are about to receive a booklet made by the Abbey. I hasten to confess that we were very upset not to have been consulted. As a former pupil, I was the 1st to take them a copy of the memoirs of my little sister and I’m the only one to have been ousted. Our Mother was very hurt by the Abbey’s distrust of us. Shouldn’t we have been shown the manuscript before it was printed? What we feared has happened, there are some big mistakes in it, the most important one concerning the drawing page 48. Thérèse never learnt to draw. We testified to this fact at the trial. The event related on p. 141 of Story of a Soul concerns me. I was the one who drew the portrait of Sr Geneviève in question. We have it here, with my signature and the date on it. – Elsewhere, I can see that they have their memories muddled up, but that doesn’t matter. – I’m telling you this so that you don’t pay any unreserved compliments. I’d be pleased if you could point out the matter of the drawing, as if you yourself had noticed it.

All in all, it’s written in the right spirit. The nuns want to dispel the bad impression that people have of the boarding school because Thérèse was not happy there. They appear to love her.

I send you a quick kiss, dear little sister
