Dear little sister,

It is right that all four of us should reunite for the 30th, the anniversary of little Thérèse’s departure for heaven. By God’s special design, we are already reaping in gladness the grain that we once sowed in tears and immense grief. This gladness is in truth veiled; it’s a happiness that cannot be felt, as Thérèse would have said.

Léonie, shall I tell you that exile still seems very long to me? No, because you know this only too well. And yet God is keeping me so busy that I don’t have time to be bored. At the moment, I’m grappling with Mrs Tifenne’s furniture. Yesterday, we received one of the curtains from the dark red bedroom as a sample. It is broken in several places, but still retains traces of its former splendour. We’ll have it dyed. I can’t tell you how revelatory all these earthly changes are. We remember Mrs Tifenne as being ever so welcoming, with her house so tastefully decorated, and now everything is being scattered. The curtains are being taken down, the furniture removed, and the bijou house sold. It was yesterday, the 27th, that the house was auctioned. I don’t know who bought it.

Oh, wise are those who do as our little saint did and don’t get attached to things that pass away! And we are such people, thanks to God. Even in our childhood, we knew that we were merely camping here and everything reflected this at home. Perhaps this is why God decided to keep all our meagre belongings! You know that the Pavilion is going to be restored to how it was. We’ll display Papa’s fishing lines there as well as his straw settee and other such pieces of furniture.

Goodbye, Léonie, I send you a kiss from the bottom of my heart, which is full of love for you.
