Dearest little Sister,

You gave us a fright when we were on retreat! At one moment Sr Marie of the Sacred Heart and I believed that God was coming for you and that, from highest heaven, or rather by coming back down to us, you would soon visit us. With pained hearts, we realised the joy that you would feel at being free of your bodily chains at last, and this thought tempered our bitterness a bit.

Still, the nightmare is over, and you missed the train again. You’re a “fortunate little sister” in our eyes, but a “poor little sister” in yours! Truly, God means to test your faith. He gives you a glimpse of hope, than takes it away again. You must be so bitterly disappointed! Oh, if only you knew how hard I’m praying for you! In fact I’m praying for all four of us, asking God to protect us in our old age, because it is advancing on us, bringing with it its cortege of frailties. Oh, very often in my prayers I repeat these words, which the Lord had written down for us: “You whom I have upheld since your birth, and have carriedsince you were born, even to your old age and grey hairs I am He,I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustainyou and I will rescue you.” (Is. 46)

And so, we need only surrender ourselves completely and then our hopes surely won’t be dashed. And we will risk not having the Pope’s blessing when the hour of our death really comes, because we won’t dare admit that we’re sick until it’s too late! As for you, you won’t be deprived, because your two blessings will hang over your head until the last minute.

Yet we’ve laughed at our misfortunes quite enough! I send you lots of love and kisses. From your little sister, who’s so happy to have you back.

Sr Geneviève of the Holy Face

Much-loved little sister, have a good Lent. For you, it is already covered by the Vicar of Jesus Christ’s blessing! You are lucky!

How are you? Are you as weak as you were?
