Dear little Sister,

All four of us are here once again, reunited to say farewell before Advent. And soon, no doubt, we’ll be reunited once more to celebrate Christmas and wish each other a happy and holy New Year again. Blessed be God for this, for it is His will!

It’s very meritorious to grow old on earth, with, in perspective, the cortege of frailties that almost certainly await us. But they represent such a good means to prove our love to Jesus and surrender ourselves completely! If roses could speak, they would say that they would prefer to be unpetalled when fresh or picked for a buttonhole than left to wilt, because they are regarded with contempt when they fade.

Oh, it’s so good to offer this sacrifice up to Jesus! It’s a sort of martyrdom, though a little-envied one, it’s true. Mother Isabelle of the Sacred Heart once said, terrified, that she didn’t know what she would have done if she had had to live a long life. God spared her.

Darling little sister, you’ll let us know what you think of the photo of Sr M. of the S.H., won’t you? Our Mother and I are very pleased with it. Our Mother was half-expecting you to write her a little note after sending the photos. She was so prompt, happy and eager to send them to you. Our darling eldest sister’s celebrations were lovely and left quite an impression on us, like a foretaste of eternal beatitude. Thérèse was surely present.

We saw Hélène Hodd who claimed to be our cousin and addressed us all as “Madam”. We know that she is not very fond of us. Sometimes, friends are more affectionate. For instance, if only you knew how kind the Miss de Fayets are to me. They came the other day.

And now, darling little sister, I’m going to say “see you soon”. I send you all my love. Sr Geneviève of the Holy Face

Don’t worry about Céline’s request; I realised that you were waiting for another opportunity and I sensed that you were disappointed. So were you afraid of upsetting us if you told us what you thought so soon?
