Beloved little sister,

I’m writing to offer you my wishes for a happy Christmas and New Year. I ask Jesus to give you what I myself desire, or better. I leave Him free to choose what is best for each of us so that He might find us pleasing in every way.

We don’t need to find ourselves pleasing. On the contrary, it would be better if we weren’t to our taste, because then humility enters our hearts and that’s worthwhile!

Last night marked the 50th anniversary of Thérèse’s Christmas grace. Were you living with us then? Do you remember what happened?

It’s extraordinary: although life seems long, I can’t believe all that has happened in the last 50 years. Thérèse was then only a child, yet she has had time to live her religious life, be canonised, proclaimed Patroness of Missions, and now her Basilica is well underway. It’s like a dream. And we have reached old age, almost without us noticing! And soon we’ll be reunited in heaven!

I don’t know whether we’ve told you that we can see the Basilica from the garden and even from the inner courtyard, particularly in winter. When the sun hits the stone, it turns to gold. It looks as though it’s just beyond our wall and that we can reach out and touch it.

Are you also aware that a monstrous hotel is being built in the Jardin de l’Etoile and that all the trees there have gone? Its grotesque bulk is visible from Les Buissonnets, and extends from the Levarand family’s land (?) right up to the Nouchet Chalet. It’s not a pretty sight. In fact, it’s very ugly and spoils Les Buissonnets a bit. That’s what earth is like!

We saw Mrs H. and we opened the grate as it was Sr M. of the S.H.’s Jubilee. Yet we could tell that she was disappointed to see how much Sr M. of the S.H. and I have changed. From now on, when it comes to loving one another, we should listen only to the language of the heart, because the language of the eyes is misleading. The language of the heart is the only language we listen to. Darling Léonie, I send you all my love and a big fond kiss

Sr Geneviève of the Holy Face and St Teresa
