Dear little Léonie,

Our Mother has decided to give us licence to speak early so that I can write and wish you a happy Christmas and New Year. Otherwise, our letters cross each time and we are deprived of the pleasure of replying to each other.

Darling little sister, are you very cold? It’s bitter weather, but your dear Mothers take such good care of you. Here, everything looks gloomy, but we shouldn’t be surprised, for are we not in exile?

Today is the 107th anniversary of our darling mother’s birth. We are celebrating by saying Mass for her so that she might rejoice and bring people happiness. From highest heaven, she sees so much suffering to heal.

You know that in November we lost a senior Sister, which means that we three are now the eldest in the Community, having lived and been professed the longest. Now, besides us, only dear little Marie of the Trinity knew Thérèse. Speaking of her, you know that she has lupus, causing a rash to cover half her head. It was starting to spread to her cheek and under her eye, but since Sr Marie of Jesus died, it has been receding, leaving her face clear. This latter had seen how worried we were about her and how patient the poor little martyr was being. She must have interceded to stop it from spreading to her face.

Sr Marie of the Sacred Heart is being very edifying, too, for she is growing frailer by the day. Soon her poor limbs will be so stiff that she won’t be able to eat by herself. Oh, how I wish all four of us were in heaven, that’s to say, already there, because losing each other will be so upsetting! But God will give us the strength to bear it, so we mustn’t worry. He is so, so good!

Darling little sister, I do believe that my mind is frozen like the ground. I would have liked to think of some nice little things to say to you, but my head is empty! Everything is iced over, except my heart, which, always ardent, loves you more than words can say.

Again, happy New Year! Your little sister

Sr Geneviève of the Holy Face    u.c.n.

Offer my respectful wishes to your Mothers.
