Dear little Léonie,

It hasn’t been very long since we last wrote to one another because we were brought together for your feast day on 25th January, and yet such a lot has happened since then. Our beloved Pius XI is dead. A page in our family history has turned, because he was a large part of our life. We owe him so much! He loved our dear little Saint and did everything he could to glorify her, so we owe him a huge debt of gratitude. He also loved our dear “Little Mother”, who wrote to him often. Yet he is in heaven. How fortunate he is to have escaped this cruel world, where he shed so many tears!

Today is the 50th anniversary of our great trial, the day that dear little Thérèse described as being “of great wealth”. Oh, since that day when gaping holes were dug in our hearts, what graces we’ve received to fill them.

God turned things around splendidly for our darling father. You’ve seen the February Annals, haven’t you? They made me weep tears of affection.

O little sister, we have so many reasons to praise the Lord!

From your little Céline, with all her love

P.S. written by Mother Agnes of Jesus:

Beloved little sister, it’s impossible for me to write to you today! I don’t have a second! I’m sorry! I love you all the more for it! I’ve mourned the death of Pius XI! You’ll understand why, but how happy he is today! Soon it will be our turn! “Godmother”1 sends her deep affection.

Your little sister and mamma.

1 Marie, Thérèse’s godmother.
